Needs analysis for language courses has to be carried out continuously to keep up with global changes and the needs of learners. This mixed-method study aims to describe the subjective and objective needs of the Mandarin learners in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Malaysia, and to check if these needs correspond with each other. Targetting at 120 learners and two instructors, a questionnaire survey was distributed, and complemented by qualitative data derived from focus group interviews. Result shows that learners’ subjective needs correspond with objective needs for motivational orientation, textbook, and cultural exposure. Statistically insignificant differences were found in the expected skills to learn, lecture-activities ratio, and teaching-learning activities. The study concludes that flexibility, student-centeredness and practicality are elements to look into for course improvement. Future research can explore learners’ needs in mastering writing skill, as well as the needs differences among learners across different levels. The study complements the understanding and knowledge of needs analysis in regard to Mandarin learning outside of China.

Walaupun bahasa Inggeris merupakan bahasa antarabangsa, tetapi bahasa-bahasa lain turut memainkan peranan dalam bidang dan hal tertentu. Senario global ini menjelaskan sebab perlunya bahasa asing dipelajari. Kajian ini membandingkan faktor-faktor dan trend pemilihan bahasa Cina dan bahasa Jepun sebagai kursus pelengkap oleh pelajar di Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). Seramai 100 orang responden mengambil bahagian dalam kajian yang menggabungkan kaedah kualitatif (temu bual) dan kuantitatif (soal selidik) ini. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa faktor intrinsik lebih berpengaruh untuk pelajar bahasa Jepun, sementara faktor ekstrinsik lebih menyerlah untuk pelajar bahasa Cina. Hasil kajian ini boleh menjadi rujukan para pengajar untuk tujuan penambahbaikan kursus dari segi kandungan dan penyampaian supaya seiring dengan kehendak terkini pelajar universiti. Even though English functions as an international language, other languages still play their role in certain fields and areas. This global scenario explains the need of learning foreign languages. The current study compares the factors and trend of choosing Chinese and Japanese as elective by university students in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). A total of 100 respondents took part in this mixed-method study, which combines qualitative (interview) and quantitative (questionnaire) method. The results show that the extrinsic factors are more influencial for the students taking Japanesewhile the intrinsic factors are more influential for those taking Chinese. The results can be a good reference for instructors in improving their courses in terms of content and delivery to fit the latest needs of the university students.

Similar Sounding Words Writing Strategy by Learners of Mandarin as a Foreign Language

A general feature observed in foreign language classroom is the usage of communication strategies by the learners in their attempts to manipulate a limited linguistics system to communicate. This research aims to investigate the usage of similar sounding words as a written communication strategy in learning Mandarin. The respondents were 59 second- and third-year Malaysian students learning Mandarin as a foreign language at a public university. An open-ended questionnaire was set to gauge respondents’ perception on the strategies used, and was divided into four parts, namely the demographic data and 3 parts of written tasks. The respondents were required to write a dialogue, answer questions on their hobbies and construct sentences using the words given. A total of 77 data of similar sounding words were found. The results showed that similar sounding words strategy was mostly applied to retroflex, alveolar, affricate, fricative, plosive, aspirated and unaspirated sounds. Another one third of the data consisted of syllables which were formed based on the learners’ understanding of the pronunciation. It was found that the strategy provides constructive help in getting the message across despite the inaccurate pronunciation. The findings also mirror the constructive learning attitude and aggressive struggle put in by the learners, and therefore, a positive strategy that should be encouraged.
