Characterisation of composite elastic properties by means of a multi-scale two-level inverse approach

Abstract: This work deals with the problem of characterising the elastic properties of a composite material at both mesoscopic (ply-level) and microscopic (constitutive phases-level) scales. This goal is attained by means of an adequate multi-scale identification strategy (MSIS) which aims at identifying the constitutive properties, at each relevant scale, by exploiting the information restrained in the macroscopic dynamic response of the composite. In this background, the multi-scale identification problem is split int… Show more

“…To this purpose, a general finite element (FE) model of the agglomerate RVE integrating all the previous parameters is proposed in this work. The modelling strategy relies, on the one hand, on a generalisation of the Voronoi's tesselation (VT) algorithm [24] and, on the other hand, on the strain energy homogenisation technique of periodic media presented in [25][26][27][28][29][30]. In particular, as far as the VT algorithm is concerned, two affine transformations (i.e.…”

“…This homogenisation scheme has proven to be an efficient numerical procedure able to determine the equivalent properties of different heterogeneous materials characterised by complex EC topologies. The strain energy homogenisation technique of periodic media based on volume averaged stresses has already been utilised in other works, see [7,8]. The detailed procedure can be found in [4].…”
