Characterisation of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide in dialysis patients and its reduced prognostic significance in the elderly

Abstract: Characterisation of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in chronic haemodialysis patients and its prognostic significance in age stratification have not been addressed. A prospective cohort study with cross-sectional analyses at baseline was performed. Outcomes were all-cause mortality, non-malignancy-related mortality, and cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related mortality. NT-proBNP was significantly higher in elderly, female, and low dry weight patients. Study patients were divided into two gro… Show more

“…In addition to the LA, NT-proBNP can also reflect cardiac diastolic function. Previous research has shown that NT-proBNP ranges from 3,703 to 6,360 pg/mL in HD patients [32,33]. The mean NT-proBNP level in our study was 4,220 ng/L (range, 2,086-11,025 ng/L), which is consistent with previous research reports.…”

“…The main outcome of this study was late discharge (postmenstrual age at discharge was in the fourth quartile (highest) among infants born at the same GA). In supplementary analyses, we also analyzed total costs during hospitalization and the major neonatal morbidities that may prolong the length of hospital stay, including BPD [defined as oxygen dependency at 36 weeks' corrected GA ( 21 )], NEC [stage 2 or higher NEC according to the criteria of Bell et al ( 22 )], and nosocomial infection [defined as meningitis or culture-positive sepsis ( 23 )].…”

“…For chronic cases, on the other hand, neprilysin (responsible for the degradation of ANP and BNP) (34) inhibitor is used. Recent studies reported that human proBNP, in bloodstream and its post-translational modification at the N-terminal region could lead to its higher levels in cardiac patients (35).…”
