“…The cloning of SM proteins corresponding to those of the predominant HDM allergens has now facilitated studies of their sequence homology (25,26,34,45,46,49,50), localization (47,51), enzymatic activity (7,16,22,35,40), and interactions with the immune system (8,11,30). Here, we have studied differences in the types and magnitudes of the systemic antibody and cellular responses to characterize the specific immune response in OS and compare it to the more severe and debilitating crusted form of the disease (CS).…”

“…Other ELISAs have been used for the diagnosis of mange in rabbits (Arlian et al, 1994) however, to the best of our knowledge they have not been characterized regarding their cut off level, sensitivity, and specificity. Other S. scabiei recombinant antigens with repetitive sequences (similar to Ss20 B3), which have been suggested to be involved in immune evasion, have been assayed for their suitability for diagnosis (in porcine and human sera), giving a high non-specific background reaction of the negative sera (Kuhn et al, 2008). Zhang et al (2013) have developed a dot-ELISA assay for the serodiagnosis of sarcoptic mange in rabbits using recombinant thioredoxin peroxidase with high sensitivity (95.3%) and specificity (93.8%) representing a rapid, convenient, and efficient technique.…”

“…Arthropods that can pierce vertebrate skin have mouthparts especially adapted for piercing, cutting or burrowing (e.g. Reid 2002;Kuhn et al 2008). The deer ked, as other louse flies, is adapted for piercing skin of the host with feeding apparatus including three sets of tiny teeth, one set situated just in the entrance of haustellum (Haarløv 1964).…”
