Characterisation of wild rabbit commercial game farms in Spain

Abstract: The aim of this research is to characterise the wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) commercial game farms in Spain using variables related to structure, management and marketing. To this end, a structured survey was administered in 2009 to 21 privately-owned farms. This subsector was an average age of 13. The average size of the breeding stock of the farms was 431 does and 64 bucks. Eighty-five percent of the farms kept all or part of the breeding stock in cages and 38.1% used artificial insemination. “…Thanks to the overview of the rabbit sector provided by the value chain analysis, it is possible to understand the economic, service and product flows that place rabbit meat at the disposal of consumers (González-Redondo and Sánchez-Martínez, 2014) and which, in a 180 degree turn, oblige us to look back along the same chain both for knowledge to create new products and services and with a view to meeting their respective needs in economic terms (McNitt et al, 2003), in an ongoing feedback process.…”

“…Current anthropogenic pressure on wild populations imposes the need to raise wild animals under artificial conditions. The wild rabbit is currently being reared for recreational purposes in several countries of the Mediterranean part of Europe where there is a well‐developed wild rabbit farming subsector, where wild rabbits are farmed to restock hunting reserves (González‐Redondo & Sánchez‐Martínez, ). But the wild rabbit farms also rear rabbits for conservational purposes, in this case the aim is or to restock the wild populations decimated by myxomatosis and rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease (González‐Redondo, ), or to contribute for the conservation of other endangered wild species like the Iberian lynx, whose natural prey is the wild rabbit.…”
