Characterising the intra-cluster light in The Three Hundred simulations

A. Contreras-Santos,
A. Knebe,
W. Cui
et al.

Abstract: We characterise the intra-cluster light (ICL) in ensembles of full-physics cluster simulations from The Three Hundred project, a suite of 324 hydrodynamical resimulations of cluster-sized halos. We identify the ICL as those stellar particles bound to the potential of the cluster itself, but not to any of its substructures, and separate the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) by means of a fixed 50 kpc aperture. We find the total BCG+ICL mass to be in agreement with state-of-the-art observations of galaxy clusters. … Show more

“…Despite the diversity (10%-30%) in ICL fractions among the GRT clusters, we find that the median ICL fraction for relaxed clusters (the solid red line) is higher compared to unrelaxed clusters (the solid blue line). This difference shows the possibility that the dynamical state of clusters can play a role in the ICL fraction of clusters, as suggested by both the observation and the theoretical studies (e.g., Da Rocha et al 2008;Montes & Trujillo 2018;Ragusa et al 2021Ragusa et al , 2023Contini et al 2023Contini et al , 2024Contreras-Santos et al 2024).…”
