Characteristic Entities in PhotoStress Method

Abstract: The presented paper describes characteristic entities in PhotoStress method -isoclinic fringes, singular points, isostatic lines, and isochromatic fringes. These entities are used in PhotoStress method to visualise and quantify deformation and stress fields of various photoelastically coated structural elements.

“…The difference between these values is 3.6%, which means that the experimental measurement was relatively precise. The works [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ] emphasize that the use of an elasto-optical coating of the surface layer allows quantitative and qualitative analysis of the direction and magnitude of principal stresses and strains as a response to pressure loads on various structural components. Due to the versatility of this method, it can be used in many ways in various aspects of engineering projects, analysis of solutions to architectural structures, development of prosthetic implants, development of structural components of aircraft, machinery, etc.…”

“…Each row describes three strains acting on a plane that is aligned with one of the global coordinate axes. This data enables the three principal strain magnitudes to be determined (𝜀 𝒋 , 𝑗 = 1,2,3) in addition to their orientation [49,50]. This is done in Matlab by calculating the eigenvalues and eigenvectors respectively.…”

“…A reflection polariscope is used to monitor and measure the surface strains on the photoelastically coated test component for PhotoStress analysis. The number N is known as fringe order and illustrates the size of δ as shown in table 1 (Frankovský et al, 2014). Once the 𝛿 = 𝑁λ is known, the principal strain difference is found by:…”
