Characteristic Modes Analysis of a Near-Field Polarization-Conversion Metasurface for the Design of a Wideband Circularly Polarized X-Band Antenna

Abstract: A metasurface (MS) based on loop elements operating in the near field of a linearly-polarized microstrip antenna is employed to realize a circularly polarized radiated field. The properties of the loop unit cell are highlighted with the help of the Characteristic Mode Analysis that is employed for investigating the achievable linear to circular polarization conversion bandwidth and providing the guidelines for the design of the final antenna. A finite structure comprising 4×4 unit cells is tailored for achievi… Show more

“…In [17], a low-complexity square-shaped MTS-based CP antenna with meandering microstrip line and cross-slot ground plane suffers from narrow IBW. In [19], a rectangularring MTS-based CP antenna with slanted-slot ground plane suffers from very narrow IBW and ARBW despite straightforward structure. In [21], an H-shaped MTS-based CP antenna suffers from narrow ARBW and bulkiness.…”

“…Characteristic mode analysis (CMA) has gradually been employed in the design and development of MTS-based CP antennas [17], [18], [19], [20]. In [17], an MTSbased CP patch antenna with cross-slot ground plane and sequentially-rotated feed network achieves an IBW of 28.2% (4.8 -6.35 GHz) and 3-dB ARBW of 20.9% (6.8 -9.7 GHz).…”

“…Antenna design is a challenge for researchers due to the limitations of size, mass, operating frequency, and required bandwidth. In [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ], various antenna types proposed for CubeSat were designed and analyzed, such as monopole, dipole, helical, patch, slot, phase array, reflect array, and metamaterial-based antennas.…”
