Characteristics and Controlling Factors of Tight Gas Sandstones from the Upper Shanxi and Lower Shihezi Formations in the Northern Sulige Area, Ordos Basin, China

Jianting Xu,
Chunyong Yu,
Dan Qi
et al.

Abstract: Tight sandstone gas reservoirs with ultralow porosity (<10%) and permeability (<1.0 mD) in the Ordos Basin exhibit enormous resource potential. In this work, the characteristics of highquality tight sandstone reservoirs in the eighth member of the Shihezi Formation (He 8) and the first member of the Shanxi Formation (Shan 1) of the northern Sulige area are investigated. To study the characteristics and controlling factors of the tight sandstone, various technical methods, including casting thin sections, scann… Show more

“…Taking the reservoirs in the Shanxi Formation as an example, the average quartz content in the sandstone is notably high, reaching up to 92%, in contrast to the reservoirs in the Xujiahe Formation in the Western Sichuan Depression. Despite both formations possessing tight gas sandstone reservoirs, the quartz sandstone reservoirs prevalent in the Shanxi Formation surpass the lithic sandstone reservoirs in the study area in terms of porosity and permeability [66,67]. Furthermore, owing to the relatively gentle overall tectonic activity in the Ordos Basin, microfractures play a pivotal role in its reservoirs, with their impact being less pronounced than that of microfractures in the study area [68].…”
