Characteristics and driving forces of spatial expansion of oasis cities and towns in Hexi Corridor, Gansu Province, China

Abstract: The study explores the characteristics of urban spatial expansion and dynamic mechanism by using expansion speed index, expansion intensity index, compact index, fractal dimension, and extended flexibility index. We built the index system of influencing factors of urban spatial expansion by using the grey incidence model. The results showed that urban spatial expansion rate in the Hexi Corridor has been on the upward trend since 1987. Expansion intensity showed an obvious upward trend, however, the upward tren… Show more

“…This finding is consistent with the results reported by Liao (2011) and Liu et al (2014), and the situation was similar in other arid areas such as the Aksu Oasis , the Hotan Oasis (Amuti & Luo 2014) and the Keriya Oasis of Xinjiang in northwest China. The expansion pattern with "outward extension and inward filling" also occurred in the oases of the Manas River Valley (Cheng et al 2006) and Sangong River watershed .…”

“…The natural foundation and environmental background are important as both constraints and incentives of urban growth [46]. Terrain conditions and distribution of water resources have been regarded as factors that influence urban land expansion in China, although they are not the main drivers [12,47].…”

“…Land use change (LUC) is generally related to two aspects, natural environmental and anthropogenic drivers in the physical world [10]. Drivers related to the natural environment include topographical and hydrologic conditions [11][12][13] and natural hazards [14,15]. Anthropogenic drivers, such as demographic…”

“…Therefore, how to delimit more reasonable UGBs for Jiayuguan City is an issue concern. At present, scholars have only unilaterally researched Jiayuguan from the perspective of city expansion type [39,42]. Worse, few scholars have studied UGBs from the perspective of urban expansion in Jiayuguan City.…”

“…Oasis cities in China are mostly located in the continental river basin within the arid to semi-arid areas having fragile eco-environment [39], are highly concentrated and sensitive areas and are a complex representative area of human activities [40]. The contradiction between urban expansion and ecological conservation is prominent in oasis cities.…”
