Characteristics and Mechanics Analysis of Debris Flow Disaster in Xinjiang Arid Area

Abstract: Xinjiang arid area is characterized by low rainfall, strong evaporation capacity, sparse vegetation, intensive tectonic movement, and fragile ecological environment ; the rainfall-type debris flow in the arid area are obviously different from the same type debris flow in humid and subhumid area of China with conditions of rainfall excitation, watershed morphology, motion and deposition processes, material composition, active period and disaster mechanism. Investigations and analyses of characteristics of rainf… Show more

“…At present, Xinjiang has become one of the largest production and export regions for processed tomatoes in China and the third largest in the world, with the export ratio accounting for more than 30% of the global trade, jumping up to become the most important processed tomato production base in China [3,4]. However, 2 of 16 Xinjiang is a typical arid and semiarid region, and its annual rainfall is only one-tenth of the evapotranspiration, making water resources very scarce [5,6]. However, processing tomatoes requires a significant amount of water during their whole life cycle [7].…”

“…Previous research on debris flows in the TSMs has primarily concentrated on analyzing debris flows at a single gully scale [12][13][14][15], including the gully tectono-geomorphologic investigation, disaster event's parameter calculation, and mitigation method planning. Yet, the establishment of a region-wide debris flow database and debris flow hazard and risk assessment are still lacking.…”

“…Xinjiang, China is a typical arid area with a large temperature difference between day and night. The annual precipitation of Xinjiang is 147 mm, and the annual average evaporation is as high as 1500-2300 mm [2,3]. Water resources in this area are exceedingly scarce, and the sustainable development of agriculture in this area depends on irrigation [4,5].…”
