Characteristics and Sources of Black Carbon in Atmospheric Dustfall Particles from Huangshi, China

Abstract: Concentrations of carbonaceous particles in atmospheric dustfall particles in Huangshi, an industrial city in central China, were determined using a thermal-optical reflectance method. The black carbon (BC) contents in ninety-five dustfall samples ranged from 4.3 to 64.9 g kg -1 with an average of 17.0 g kg -1 . These values were higher than those in world background soils and demonstrated serious contamination of the environment in this city. Overall, BC accounted for 17.6-71.3% (mean: 42.0%) of the organic c… Show more

“…Several specific chemical components, such as primary sugar compounds (i.e., primary saccharides and sugar alcohols) emitted persistently from biogenic sources, have long been suggested as powerful and unique biomarkers in tracing sources, as well as abundances of PBOA (Bauer et al, 2008a;Medeiros et al, 2006;Simoneit et al, 2004b;Zhang et al, 2010;Zhu et al, 2016). For instance, ambient concentrations of glucose have been used as markers for plant materials (such as pollen, leaves, and their fragments) or soil emissions from several areas in the world (Fu et al, 2012;Jia et al, 2010a, b;Pietrogrande et al, 2014;Rathnayake et al, 2017).…”

“…Using coal as its main energy, the rapid development of HS's heavy industry has caused high energy consumption and severe environmental pollution. In recent years, with the expansion of industrial scale (with mean annual growth rate of 12%) and an increase of urban vehicles (with mean annual growth rate of 20%) (http://www.huangshi.gov.cn), atmospheric particulates have become the major pollutants that affect air quality and endanger human health [27][28][29]. HS is more than 4500 square km (1700 square miles) in area, and has a population of more than two million.…”

“…At present, studies of PM 2.5 pollution focus on the components, emission sources, and spatiotemporal variation in China. PM 2.5 components such as organic carbon, elemental carbon, sulfates, nitrates, and geological material have been studied in different cities and regions (Xiu et al, 2015;Zhao et al, 2016;Zhan et al, 2016). However, few studies have explored the biological fraction of PM 2.5 including bacteria, fungi, pollen, viruses, spores, and cell debris (Cao et al, 2014;Li et al, 2015;Yan et al, 2016;Gao et al, 2017).…”
