Characteristics of a bistable permanent magnet linear actuator with soft magnetic mover

Abstract: Modelling and characteristics of a newly developed bistable permanent magnet linear actuator are presented. The permanent magnets are fixed and the mover is soft magnetic one. The driving and the holding force can be varied practically independently as they are mainly formed through different air gaps. Static and dynamic characteristics of the actuator are obtained. The static force characteristics are obtained using finite element method for different permanent magnets, different combinations of the two air g… Show more

“…However, the holding force in the open stage is over the need of HVCB, which increases the wastage and closing time. Thus, the unsymmetrical structure bistable PMA (USBPMA) is proposed, which overcomes some of the disadvantages of the SSBPMA, such as the large retention in the opening state, and large closing current [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. However, the USBPMA also has defects, such as a low initial speed.…”

“…Multi-stable is a trend towards power consumption reduction or fast response, through advances in high-energy permanent magnet (PM) materials like NdFeB. Yatchev et al developed a bi-stable permanent magnet linear actuator with soft magnetic mover [10]. You et al designed a concentric, bi-directional valve actuator that contains doublelayer permanent magnets to increase the holding force [11].…”

“…BPMA is an actuator towards a reduction in the power consumption or improvement the fast response, through advances in high-energy permanent magnet (PM) materials like neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) [8]. But the BPMA possesses quite nonlinear force/stroke characteristic, which results in insufficient driving force when mover is away from target end [9,10]. Spring mechanism was introduced to solve this problem, which makes the actuator more complex and impairs holding force.…”
