Characteristics of Adolescents Affected by Mass Psychogenic Illness Outbreaks in Schools in Nepal: A Case-Control Study

Abstract: This paper presents the first systematic case-control study of correlates of mass psychogenic illness (MPI) in an adolescent school population. MPI is generally construed as a dissociative phenomenon spread by social contagion to individuals who are prone to dissociation. We sought to test if the correlates of dissociative experiences most commonly proposed in the literature could predict caseness among students affected by episodes of mass psychogenic illness occurring in schools in Nepal. We assessed 194 cas… Show more

“…The HP-S model recognizes psychological contagion as a measurable concept that presumably involves the instigation of successive (episodic) experiences due to expectancy effects on individuals or across a group of people. But we must underscore that in many cases, such as mass psychogenic illness ( Sapkota, 2017 ), the exact mechanisms of contagion are not fully understood. As our study seeks to map the reported signs and symptoms in haunt-type episodes, it is notable that contagion (as a sharing or commonality of experiences or symptoms) is present not only across multiple residences, but between percipients.…”

“…Vicarious experiences can have dissociative pathological manifestations as well, such as in mass psychogenic illness (Jones et al, 2000;Van Ommeren et al, 2001) and recent work highlights the importance of dissociation and hypnotic suggestibility in predicting proneness to mass psychogenic illness (Sapkota, Brunet, & Kirmayer 2020). However, the relationship between dissociation and social resonance is likely complex as certain features of dissociation, such as absorption, may facilitate such effects, other features, such as depersonalization, may hinder vicarious emotional experience (Barrett, 2016).…”

“…Neat diagnostic packages often ignore contextual realities. Often systemic causes get co-opted in favor of individualized understandings, for example, while earlier research implicates dissociation in mass hysteria, in Nepal, researchers found living in nuclear families a factor correlated with Mass Psychogenic Illness (Sapkota et al, 2020). Being cognizant of this history allows us to pay attention to Psychology's reproduction of neoliberal capitalism and fundamentalism today.…”
