Characteristics of cancer in the eskimos of Southwestern Alaska

Abstract: Using records from the Public Health Service Alaska Native Hospital at Bethel, Alaska, the author reviews all known cancers occurring among the Yupik Eskimos of Southwestern Alaska during the 101/2 year period from July 1957 through December 1967. Since this facility is the source, direct or indirect, of virtually all medical care provided to a well‐defined population, these records can be used for a reasonably accurate estimate of incidence, mortality, and other epidemiologic characteristics of cancer in this… Show more

“…Although the AMRU dissolved in 1963 when the Defense Research Board withdrew their funding, the legacy of Hildes' work on the incidence and character of Inuit salivary gland tumors has lived on. His research would influence a variety of other researchers in the field of circumpolar health, including J. Bradly Arthaud (1970Arthaud ( , 1972 and Robert Fortuine (1969). Beginning his career as a surgical pathologist in Washington, Arthaud would go on to employ histopathological methods to assess the incidence of parotid tumors found within the Alaska Native Medical Center.…”

“…Fortuine was another individual who was inspired by Hildes' findings. In his role as director of the Alaska Native Medical Center (1971)(1972)(1973)(1974)(1975)(1976)(1977) Fortuine not only drew national attention to Inuit nasopharngeal cancer rates through his own epidemiological research in Southwest Alaska, but he also set up the infrastructure necessary for the establishment of the Alaska Native Tumor Registry (Fortuine 1969). This body, which was founded in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1974 by Dr. Anne Lanier, in collaboration with colleagues from the American National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would routinely draw attention to rates of salivary gland cancer found within northern Native populations (Nielsen, Storm, Gaudette, and Lanier 1996; Alaska Native Tumor Registry 2018).…”
