Characteristics of Changes in Urban Land Use and Efficiency Evaluation in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau from 1990 to 2020

Abstract: The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau has seen decades of changes in land use/cover as a result of urbanization and regional planning policy. Research on the efficiency of social development aids in the pursuit of social and environmental sustainability. Based on CLUD and socioeconomic statistical data, this study systematically analyses the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of urban land use in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and evaluates its social development efficiency from three perspectives—the holistic, the munic… Show more

“…From 2000-2022, the area covered by green land decreased by 474.05 km 2 , resulting in a decrease of 9.17% in its share of the entire study area. From different sub-level type perspectives, the area of cultivated land, forest land and grassland also decreased by 229.16 km 2 , 81.81 km 2 and 163.08 km 2 . Correspondingly, the proportion of these three types decreased by 4.52%, 1.57% and 3.08%, respectively.…”

“…In hot summer, people are often attracted to the cool climate of coastal cities [1]. However, with the continuous deepening of the urbanization process [2], the reinforced concrete buildings may bring the agglomeration effect of urban heat waves and form the thermal discomfort region for residents in the coastal urban areas [3][4][5]. The reasonable layout of green land space can usually cope with extreme summer temperatures and avoid the discomfort for local residents or tourists such as heatstroke, thereby improving the ecosystem service function [6,7].…”

“…Additionally, there are Tibetans living in the eight agricultural counties of the Haidong region and Xining City. Among the ethnic minorities in the province, Tibetans have the largest population and the widest distribution (Fischer, 2008;Lee et al, 2016;Zhou et al, 2021;Fu et al, 2022). Geographically, Qinghai Tibetan areas can be divided into three major regions: Qingnan, the lake area, and the agricultural area.…”

“…Cities, the core of politics, economy, society, and culture in a specific region [1], are undergoing transformation in scale and spatial structure as China's economy enters a new phase of structural adjustment [2,3]. Urbanization describes the process of population concentration and urban spatial change [4], and it is not only a key driver of global change but also leads to an expansion in population size and a transformation of lifestyles [5,6]. The expansion of urban space is the most notable feature of urbanization [7], involving complex dynamics of land use and population growth.…”
