Characteristics of Cranial Aneurysmal Bone Cyst on Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract: Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign bone tumors that most commonly occur in people younger than 30 years. The cysts are most often found in the metaphyses of long bones and rarely affect the skull. We present a 54-year-old woman with a rapidly enlarging mass in the left occipital region that caused tenderness for 2 weeks. Computed tomography (CT) revealed an expansile, osteolytic lesion with characteristic soap-bubble appearance and fluid-fluid levels. Magnetic resonance images showed a dark rim surrounding the l… Show more

“…Therefore, histopathological confirmation is crucial in forming a diagnosis. However, these results must be interpreted with great care, since confusion regarding the diagnosis may still occur if the tissue sample is taken from a small biopsy or a limited sample (28)(29)(30). In the present study, the exact diagnosis of GCT with secondary ABC was only determined after histopathological evaluation of the entire tumor.…”

“…They are most commonly found in the vertebrae and metaphysis of the long bones. (2,3,6,(8)(9)(10). Only a small percentage of ABCs are found in the skull and mandible, ranging from 3 to 6%.…”

“…Histological examination usually reveals cysts lined with spindle-shaped fibroblasts surrounding the venous bloodfilled lesion. Multinucleated giant cells along with stromal cells may also be scattered within the lesion (6,8,9,13,14). Treatment modalities range from simple surgery to a combination of methods.…”

“…The MRI of our patient had a typical appearance of fluid-fluid levels. Fluid/fluid levels are also seen in chondroblastomas, telangiectatic osteosarcomas and giant cell tumors (16).…”
