Characteristics of Economic and Environmental Benefits of Shore Power Use by Container-Ship Size

Abstract: To combat climate change, efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are being made in all industries. The shipping sector is also one of the industries that emits GHG, including carbon. One way to reduce GHG emissions in the shipping sector is to use shore power (SP) rather than auxiliary engines during berthing. Port authorities are actively expanding SP facilities because it is possible to achieve the long-term goals of environmental benefits and green ports. However, the low economic feasibility of S… Show more

“…Compliance with environmental regulations is facilitated, reducing the risk of fines and legal issues (Zhu et al, 2022). Additionally, green practices boost employee engagement, productivity, and morale (K. Kim, 2022). By reducing resource consumption, minimizing waste, and mitigating environmental impacts, green practices contribute to the long-term sustainability of the sector (Guo & Yang, 2019).…”

“…Shore power can re-duce the emission of polluting gases in the port area, so it has become widely used in the big ports of the world [4]. However, the massive transformation of shore power berths will bring new challenges to the power supply system [5]. Load forecasting technology can predict the possible future load according to the feature information and forecasting model before the ship docks.…”

“…As the container transportation industry has developed over the past 20 years, the size of container ships and the number of containers that they accommodate have increased [1][2][3][4][5]. Accordingly, the construction of bigger ships, which is a confirmed method of reducing container shipping costs, is gradually accelerating [6][7][8]. By building bigger containers ships, advantages such as economies of scale for marine logistics and transportation, reduction of construction costs, and securing competitiveness in the fierce cargo market can be obtained [9][10][11][12].…”
