Characteristics of heavy minerals and grain size of surface sediments on the continental shelf of Prydz Bay: implications for sediment provenance

Abstract: Data on grain size and heavy mineral composition for surface sediments on the Prydz Bay continental shelf was analysed to identify sediment features and provenance. The grain size composition of surface sediments indicate spatial variations in the glaciomarine environment and the key factors influencing sedimentation, which on the shelf include topography/water depth, currents and icebergs. The study area was divided into two sections by Q-type factor analysis: section I included Prydz Channel, Amery Basin and… Show more

“…After collection, all samples were stored at −20 °C and then freeze-dried in the laboratory until analysis. The samples were distributed over a broad range of geographic zones (Wang et al 2015), including the inner bay, banks and deep-ocean regions (Fig. 1).…”

“…All of the polar fractions were blow-dried under nitrogen, redissolved in a solvent Wu et al (2017). According to surface sediment characteristics (Wang et al 2015), the light grey dotted lines indicate three sections in our study area: the inner bay, banks and deep ocean. The topographic map was generated using ODV (Schlitzer 2015).…”
