Characteristics of Patients Diagnosed with Osteoporosis in South Korea: Results from the National Claim Registry

Abstract: BackgroundAlthough osteoporosis is increasing medical issue in the elderly population, attempts to analyze the characteristics of patients diagnosed with osteoporosis are rare in South Korea. “…All clinics and hospitals should submit the diagnoses data defined by the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10), of inpatients and outpatients with demographic information for claims. 16 To identify osteoporosis patients, we adopted the previously developed algorithm by Ha and colleagues 4,16,17 : (1) among Koreans 45 years of age and older, eligible participants were selected by ICD-10 codes of M80 (osteoporosis with pathologic fractures), M81 (osteoporosis without pathologic fractures), and M82 (osteoporosis in other diseases); (2) participants were included who had prescriptions of medications exclusively for osteoporosis treatment (bisphosphonate, selective estrogen receptor modifier, and calcitonin); (3) elderly patients (males: ≥70 years, females: ≥65 years) with an ICD diagnostic code; (4) a history of prescribed medications that caused osteoporosis with an ICD diagnostic code; (5) a history of a disease that causes osteoporosis with an ICD diagnostic code of osteoporosis; and (6) last, an osteoporosis-related fracture such as vertebral fractures with M48.4 (fatigue fracture of vertebra), M48.5 (collapsed vertebra, NEC), S22.0 (fracture of thoracic vertebra), S22.1 (multiple fractures of thoracic spine), S32.0 (fracture of lumbar vertebra); wrist fractures with S52.5 (fracture of lower end of radius) and S52.6 (fracture of lower end of both ulna and radius); hip fractures with S72.0 (fracture of neck of femur) and S72.1 (pertrochanteric fracture).
