“…Histopathologic features include an interface dermatitis with degeneration of basal epidermal cells, keratinocyte necrosis, and a superficial dermal perivascular lymphohistiocytic infiltrate . Most episodes of EM heal over 2‐3 weeks, but recurrences can become cyclical in a small subset of patients; rare instances of this phenomenon have been described in infants . Management includes a careful assessment for systemic infection and supportive measures for pain, poor oral intake, and wound care.…”

“…While in adults HSV has been associated as the most common etiology of EM, representing roughly two‐thirds of cases, HSV infection has been associated only in 0%‐14% of pediatric EM cases . Most children experience a single outbreak, though some have experienced recurrent erythema multiforme . Approximately 30 cases of pediatric recurrent erythema multiforme have been reported in current literature, of which the etiology of those reported was most frequently associated with HSV infection, although EM from recurrent HSV or from a primary infection could not be distinguished …”

“…Erythema multiforme is an acute and usually self-limiting hypersensitivity skin reaction following infections or exposure to certain allergens and drugs. It appears in mild or severe and even life-threatening forms with oral, genital and ocular signs, along with the spectrum of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis [6]. Its most typical presentation consists of fixed red papules that enlarge over time and produce well-demarcated plaques, which undergo variable concentric changes with darker outer rings.…”
