Characteristics of Portable Core Samplers for Lake Deposit Investigations

Abstract: A suitable sampling tool is indispensable for making sediment observation. Eleven portable sediment core samplers using lake sediment observations are introduced: two box core samplers, four dropping core samplers, and five pushing core samplers. Some are popular for making sediment observations. However, others are unique and are not well known, although they have excellent characteristics. Their structures, merits, demerits, and suitable lake conditions are explained. Core samplers introduced are: Ekman-Birg… Show more

“…The physical parameters are presented in Table 2. In the analysis, the range of inner diameters of pipes was set from 0.030 to 0.070 because pipes with inner diameter of 0.020–0.075 m are typically used for sampling (Kota et al, 2019; Mudroch & Azcue, 1995). Furthermore, the outer radius Rp ${R}_{{\rm{p}}}$ is set from 0.016 to 0.036 m (we assume the pipe thickness as 0.001 m).…”

“…Several sampling devices such as dredges, grab samplers, gravity samplers, and piston corers are used for sediment sampling depending on purposes (Kota et al, 2019; Mudroch & Azcue, 1995). Many of those samplers are weighted because they use their gravitational force and inertial force for sediment penetration.…”

“…The water temperature and EC25 from the loggers were calibrated by those from the profiler with relatively high accuracies. Lake water and bottom sediment at site MD were sampled on boat by a Van Dorn sampler (URL https://www.kc-denmark.dk/products/water-sampler/van-dorn-watersampler.aspx (accessed on 6 September 2021)) and an Ekman-Burge grab sampler [19], respectively. The water temperature, EC25 and pH of the lake water were then measured by a thermocouple thermometer (Type TX1001, YOKOGAWA, Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan), a compact EC meter (Type LAQUAtwin EC-11, HORIBA, Co. Ltd., Kyoto, Japan) and a compact pH meter (Type LAQUAtwin pH-11B, HORIBA, Co. Ltd., Kyoto, Japan; URL https://www.horiba.com/en_en/water-quality/pocket-meters/ (accessed on 18 November 2021)).…”

“…While lowering the profiler below water surface by rope (descending speed of 0.5 m/s or less), water temperature, electric conductivity and water turbidity were automatically recorded in the profiler itself, with the pressure sensor responding to the water pressure increasing at the 0.1 m depth interval. Meanwhile, surface water and bottom sediment were sampled by a 2 L Van-Dorn water sampler (URL: https://www.kc-denmark.dk/products/water-sampl er/van-dorn-water-sampler.aspx (accessed on 6 September 2021)) and an Ekman-Burge grab sampler [34], respectively. The undisturbed sediment ca.…”
