Characteristics of serogroup ANeisseria meningitidis strains isolated in the Central African Republic in February 1992

Abstract: A severe epidemic of serogroup A meningococcus meningitis occurred in the northwest Central African Republic from January to March 1992. Strains from 24 patients were characterized using serotyping, testing of susceptibility to antibiotics, and multilocus enzyme electrophoresis. In 23 of the 24 patients the causal strain was found to be 4:P1.9/clone III-1. These results indicate that such strains continue to spread in Africa and have taken hold in areas outside the "meningitis belt." This may be a consequence … Show more

“…A study of meningococcal carriage was performed in July 1989 in a military camp situated in the region of Casablanca, and a carriage rate of 4-3 % was observed [25]. All the 65 strains isolated were identical and represented a clone of subgroup III identified in 2 of the 25 patients from Morocco in 1989 included in this study (Guibourdenche and Riou, unpublished data [26] and the resurgence of clone 111-1 in the Central African Republic in the early 1992 [21], suggesting that with the exception of the epidemic in Niger, this 2-year period was marked by low incidence of disease.…”

“…Clone identification and other characteristics of the strains Table 2 summarizes the origin and the characteristics of the 125 patient strains examined. The analysis of the 24 strains from the Central African Republic has been published elsewhere [21]. All but 6 of the strains (95 %) were serogroup A.…”

“…Serogroupprogressed from the eastern countries of the meningitis belt ing was performed by using slide agglutination testing with (Sudan, Chad, and Ethiopia) [11,15,16] to Kenya [17], rabbit antiserum (Murex Diagnostics, Dartford, United KingUganda, and Tanzania [18] in 1989, the Central African Repubdom) to capsular polysaccharide. MICs of penicillin were deterlic in 1992 [19], Zambia in 1993 [6], and Angola in 1995 mined by the broth microdilution method as specified by the (D. A. Caugant, unpublished data). This clone continues to National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards [20].…”
