Characteristics of Shiga Toxin–Producing Escherichia coli O157 in Slaughtered Reindeer from Northern Finland

Abstract: Fecal samples collected from 470 slaughtered reindeer 6 to 7 months of age were screened by real-time PCR (after enrichment) for Shiga toxin genes (stx) and then for Escherichia coli serogroup O157. Shiga toxin genes were found frequently (>30% of samples), and serogroup O157 was detected in 20% of the stx-positive samples. From these samples, a total of 25 E. coli O157:H isolates (nonmotile but PCR positive for fliC) were obtained. Twenty-four of these E. coli O157:H isolates did not ferment sorbitol and orig… Show more

“…More than 80 studies on the genotyping und virulence profiling of STEC and EHEC were published in the past 10 years, examples of which are given in several studies [ 23 , 61 , 62 , 63 ]. In general, all of these screening studies aimed to elucidate the serotypes and virulence properties of STEC including Stx-variants, LEE, further toxins, and other adhesion factors such as the ones mentioned above.…”

“…It is logical that the regurgitation can reach lungs more easily if the animal is in horizontal position during commonly occurring reflexive gasping [ 32 ]. Aspiration of rumen content is also a concern for meat hygiene, since potential pathogens are transported to the clean side of the abattoir and can contaminate other carcasses and organs [ 38 , 39 ].…”

“…The genes encoding the subtilase cytotoxin (SubAB) are present in various Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains [1][2][3]. SubAB was originally found and characterized in the E. coli O113:H21 strain 98NK2, which was isolated from a patient suffering from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) [4,5].…”

“…Several virulence profiling studies showed that subAB genes are often present in sheep and wild ruminant STEC isolates. [3,6,7]. In addition, such STEC did not contain the locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE) [8][9][10].…”
