Characteristics of the Polyphenolic Profile and Antioxidant Activity of Cone Extracts from Conifers Determined Using Electrochemical and Spectrophotometric Methods

Abstract: The aim of the study was to analyze the polyphenolic profile of cone extracts of Douglas fir, Scots pine and Korean fir, and to study their antioxidant activity. The mechanism of electro-oxidation of polyphenols (such as procyanidins and catechins) from cone extracts was investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), as well as spectrophotometric methods—ABTS (2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate)), DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), FRAP (Ferric Reducing A… Show more

“…Microansamycin is a member of the macrolactams family, important bioactive compounds with anti-tuberculous and anti-tumor activity 55 . Similarly, its host, the Korean fir, produces rich polyphenol compounds like quercetin (flavonoid) and carotenoids to provide the strong antioxidant properties of Korean fir 56 . The essential oil of Korean fir includes the terpene group (monoterpenes, oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, and limonene) 57 , 58 which also have strong antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities 1 , 4 .…”

“…DPV and SWV are more sensitive compared to CV and have been used more often for the characterization of medicinal plant extracts. Similarly to CV, oxidation peaks are registered on the voltammograms (Figure 13B) [117]. The oxidation potentials are reflected by the antioxidant constituents, and the oxidation currents depend on the concentration of the antioxidants.…”

“…Another important point is the extracted faradaic current which results in analyzing the electrode reactions more precisely [ 59 ]. It is also used effectively to measure the antioxidant capacity of food [ 60 ], plant extracts [ 61 ], and polyphenolic compounds such as procyanides and catechins from cone extracts which showed significant ability to reduce oxidative stress, scavenge free radicals, and transitions metal ions as well [ 62 , 63 , 64 ].…”
