Characteristics of the stabilized glow discharge in air

Abstract: The discharge space between a positive cylindrical electrode (in the diameter range 0.3185-3.175 cm) and a coaxial outer electrode of diameter 58.1 cm has been irradiated by a radioactive beta -source to obtain a stable glow discharge in which streamers are absent. Onset electric gradient, voltage-current characteristics and electric gradient measurements at the anode surface in the presence of corona have been obtained. A modified form of the Townsend voltage-current characteristic has been derived which is i… Show more

“…Corona discharges in air at atmospheric pressure occur in two different modes: homogeneous glow discharges (glow corona) and filamentary streamer discharges (streamer corona) [1]. On one hand, corona discharges are undesirable in electrical power components (transmission lines, transformers, generators, etc.)…”

“…As the background electric field intensifies, point corona discharges are initiated from the tips of sharp objects on the ground. It is known from laboratory experiments that corona discharges from sharp objects occur in two different forms: as a thin luminous glow layer and as bright, filamentary streamer channels [2]. The former, known as a glow corona, appears as a thin bright plasma, with a continuous current.…”

“…The latter, called a streamer corona, is characterized by sequences of filamentary ionized channels, which produce a pulsating current. While glow coronas are generally formed when slowly changing electric fields are applied to a sharp electrode, streamers are usually associated with rapidly changing electric fields [2].…”
