Characteristics, Sources and Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in the Ganjiang River Basin, China

Abstract: Heavy metal pollution is one of the important threats to river water quality and human health. Here, we collected surface water samples from the mainstream and tributaries in the Ganjiang River basin in January and July, 2015, in order to delineate the temporal-spatial distribution characteristics of heavy metals, identify their sources, and assess their potential risk. Compared with China's environmental quality standards for drinking water, our results revealed that 5 heavy metals, including Fe, Al, As, Mn a… Show more

“…Environmental pollution indices are useful in establishing or estimating the ecological risks posed by contaminants naturally or anthropogenically introduced into different ecosystem matrices [260,261]. Numerous studies have applied contaminant pollution indices, such as the contamination factor (CF), degree of contamination (DC), geoaccumulation index (I geo ), enrichment factor (EF), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk factor ((Er i ), potential ecological risk index (PERI), and the combined pollution index (PLI), for ERA and monitoring of the impacts of anthropogenic activities to the levels of HM in the environment [101,200,238,[262][263][264][265][266][267].…”

“…SO 4 2− concentrations in river waters are an important indicator of anthropogenic activities, especially in mining areas (Bhuiyan et al, 2010;Ako and Mfonka, 2018). Moreover, coal mining effluents, coal gangue dumping, and coal ash released by burning would lead to increased heavy metal pollution (Li and Sun, 2016;Shu et al, 2020).…”

“…Their appearance and circulation in the natural environment is due to the natural processes (e.g. bedrock weathering [16], soil-forming processes [16]), but also to the pollution from anthropogenic sources [17], i.e. mining and metallurgy [16,18,19]; chemical industry [20]; metallurgical industry [21]; surface runoff from frequently used roads [22,23]; soil overfertilization with mineral fertilizers [16,24]; use of large amounts of plant protection agents [16,24]; and overloading of landfills [25].…”
