Characterization and Antibiotic Sensitivity Profile of Bacteria in Orofacial Abscesses of Odontogenic Origin

Abstract: High prevalence of bacterial isolates was found, being the dominant. Most of the bacteria were resistant to different classes of antibiotics. Appropriate antibiotics should be given based on the bacterial isolates, culture sensitivity and clinical course of the disease.

“…Despite good access to dental care, availability of antibiotic therapy, and good socioeconomic conditions, odontogenic infections of the head and neck region are still the main cause of hospitalization in maxillofacial surgery departments [ 1 , 2 , 7 , 13 , 31 ]. Infection of the deep fascial space may not manifest as a clear deterioration of general condition, which hinders early diagnosis, delays the initiation of treatment, and increases the risk of complications [ 7 , 18 , 28 ].…”

“…Despite universal access to dental care and antibiotic therapy, odontogenic infections requiring hospitalization remain a serious clinical problem [ 1 3 ]. Bacterial virulence, decreased host immunity, and lack of appropriate treatment lead to the spread of localized odontogenic infections to the deep fascial spaces of the head and neck [ 4 , 5 ].…”

“…quasipneumoniae has been recovered in clinical specimens from patients with biliary tract infection (141), liver abscess (142), and urinary tract infection (143), while K. quasipneumoniae subsp. similipneumoniae has been implicated in urinary tract infection (144), sepsis (with antecedent necrotizing fasciitis) (145), odontogenic infection (147), and nosocomial infection (148). In addition to recent reports of Acinetobacter variabilis isolation in the context of neonatal sepsis (149) and cystic fibrosis (150), organism-specific nucleic acid has been isolated from Pediculus humanus capitis organisms collected from schoolchildren and homeless individuals in northern Africa (176,177).…”
