To evaluate the relative contributions of gold in gold-bearing ores, the mining and precious metal industry depends on analytical methods, for example neutron activation analysis, ultra-violet visible spectrometry, electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma optical emission and mass spectrometry (ICP-OES), total reflection x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (El-Taher et al 2003, Spry et al 2004, Pyrzynska 2005, Goodall and Scales 2007, Baharun and Ling 2013. The high cost of analysis, poor transportability, intricate infrastructure and complicated sample preparation protocols inspired the development of an economical alternative with rapid response and a simpler technique, such as LIBS.…”
