Characterization and Sap Transmission of Citrus Bent Leaf Viroid in Malaysia

Abstract: 12 A 328 nucleotide (nt) variant of Citrus bent leaf viroid (CBLVd) was characterized from citrus 13 varieties in Malaysia showing leaf bending, stunting and midvein necrosis. CBLVd was 14 detected by RT-PCR assay using CBLVd specific primers in 12 out of 90 samples, collected 15 from six different areas in Malaysia. The viroid was present in five species of citrus namely 16 Citrofortunella microcarpa, Citrus aurantifolia, C. hystrix, C. maxima and C. sinensis.

“…Viroids are known to primarily infect citrus species, and eight different viroids have been identified within this host. These viroids belong to the family Pospiviroidae and are divided into four distinct genera ( Mazhar et al, 2014 ; Cottilli et al, 2019 ; Iftikhar et al, 2019 ). Members of the Pospiviroidae family are characterized by their rod-like structures.…”

“…Pruning tools and grafting have been documented to transmit the CBLVd effectively in different citrus varieties regardless of rootstock. CBLVd is widely distributed in world citrus growing areas including United Arab Emirates (UAE), Italy, Israel, Pakistan, China, Cambodia, Australia, Malaysia, Iran, Japan, and recently in Argentina ( Khoo et al, 2017 ; Iftikhar et al, 2019 ; Donovan et al, 2020 ; Palacios and Figueroa, 2022 ). Three variants of CBLVd have been identified to date, which have been found in different citrus cultivars.…”
