Characterization and Sintering Behavior of Alkoxide‐Derived Aluminosilicate Powders

Abstract: Submicrometer Si02-A1203 powders with compositions of 46.5 to 76.6 wt % A1203 were prepared by hydrolysis of mixed alkoxides. Phase change, mullite composition, and particle size of powders with heating were analyzed by DTA, XRD, IR, BET, and TEM. As-produced amorphous powders partially transformed to mullite and AI-Si spinel at around 980°C. The compositions of mullite produced at 1400' and 1550°C were richer in A1203 than the compositions of stable mullite solid solutions predicted from the phase diagram of … Show more

“…As it can be seen the spectra of both dried gels display broad bands at low wavenumber, indicating a disordered distribution of aluminum and silicon tetrahedral sites. The band at $1000 cm À1 has been assigned to tetrahedral Al-O-Si bands [21,22], on the basis that introduction of Si-O-Al bonds in a SiO 2 matrix shifted the absorption band of Si-O toward the lower wavenumber. For gels heated at 900°C under slow and medium heating rates also very wide bands are displayed.…”

“…23) On the other hand, the Al2O3 / SiC sheet may react with the liquid of the SiO2-Al2O3-Yb2O3 system in the densified SiC compact at a temperature above the eutectic temperature during the joining. To investigate the influence of the phases present at a joining temperature, composite D was produced at the temperatures below (1300°C) and above (1600°C) the eutectic temperature (1400°C) of the SiO2-Al2O3-Yb2O3 system.…”

“…A broad absorption band at 1050 -1100 cm21 and a band at 470 cm 21 ascribed to the Si-O vibrations of amorphous SiO2 21 are observed for the sample calcined at 900 ± C. A shift in the first peak from 1100 to 1050 cm 21 suggests formation, in a certain degree, of Si-O -Al bonds 21,27.
