Characterization and source apportionment of atmospheric organic and elemental carbon during fall and winter of 2003 in Xi'an, China

Abstract: Abstract. Continuous measurements of atmospheric organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC) were taken during the high-pollution fall and winter seasons at Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China from September 2003 through February 2004. Battery-powered mini-volume samplers collected PM 2.5 samples daily and PM 10 samples every third day. Samples were also obtained from the plumes of residential coal combustion, motor-vehicle exhaust, and biomass burning sources. These samples were analyzed for OC/EC by thermal/optical … Show more

“…EC and OC in PM 2.5 samples were measured with the use of a DRI Model 2001 Carbon Analyzer following the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) thermal/optical reflectance (TOR) protocol (Cao et al, , 2005Chow et al, 2007). Briefly, a 0.526 cm 2 aliquot of a sample filter was placed in a quartz boat inside the analyzer and heated in a stepwise manner to temperatures of 120 • C (OC1), 250 • C (OC2), 450 • C (OC3), and 550 • C (OC4) in a non-oxidizing helium atmosphere, and 550 • C (EC1), 700 • C (EC2), and 800 • C (EC3) in an oxidizing atmosphere of 2% oxygen in helium.…”

“…In many cases, dust was observed in cyclonic disturbances with weak fronts or without fronts (Cao et al, 2003;Nie et al, 2012;Wang et al, 2013). Cold fronts could not be confirmed clearly at places of dust arrival in those studies.…”

“…The reason is that, in addition to road dust and construction dust, coal burning is a major source of mineral components in aerosols in China and emits particulate matter that is abundant in mineral elements such as Si, Al, Ca and Fe (Chen et al, 2012). Coal burning emissions have been proven to cause significant air pollution in China (Cao et al, 2005;Wang et al, 2015;H. Wang et al, 2016).…”

“…2), which mainly comes from gasoline (signature of EC1), diesel (Signature of EC2 and EC3) and coal combustions (Signature of OC2). Principal component analysis (PCA) had been applied for source analysis in many studies (Cao et al 2005. In order to obtain reliable estimates of the different sources contributing to the fine mass measured at Amin Bazar site, Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was used to identify major elements associated with sources.…”
