Characterization and Study Hard Layer on Steels Grade Machinery

Abstract: The paper also presents the growth kinetics of the hard layers on the surface grade machinery steels type AISI 9840 with a boron dehydrated paste. The thermochemical treatment was performed at three different temperatures: 1173, 1223, and 1273 K, with 2, 4, 6, and 8 h treatment time for each temperature. The presence of the hard layers FeB and Fe2B formed on the surface AISI 9840 was confirmed by cross sectional observation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), XRD analysis and the distribution of alloy eleme… Show more

“…Another important factor is the change of geometries and loss of mass on agricultural tools causing a reduction in service life; for this reason, boriding can significantly contribute to reducing the wear and abrasion on these tools [4].Boriding by dehydrated paste is a thermochemical hardening process that can be used on tools or workpieces to prolong the life of the tool [5,6]. Research shows that the FeB/Fe2B or Fe2B coatings generated can be used in sectors for agricultural, marine and aerospace [7,8,9]. This study uses a plow disc with chemical composition (weight) of C-0.62% Mn-0.90% Si-0.17%, S-0.035 %, P-0.25%, Ni-0.25%, Cr-0.025%, Cu 0.025%.…”

“…The AISI 9254 steel is used in industrial applications in machine building parts, plastic molds and zinc casting dies. Because the current conditions of use on steel and the need to improve its mechanical properties, surface treatments have been carried to extend the service life of the parts manufactured on this steel [1,2]; Therefore, thermochemical treatment is a surface modification alternative with the intention of obtaining a FeB/Fe 2 B bilayer and/or FE 2 B monolayer, in order to contribute with quantitative and qualitative properties for possible industrial applications [3,4,5,6]. Thus, this work reports the boriding process by dehydrated paste, in addition to the microstructural characterization and the mechanical property of hardness on the surface of the substrate exposed surface processing.…”
