Characterization of a Papovavirus Isolated from Fledgling Budgerigars

Abstract: A virus suspected of causing high death rates in fledgling budgerigars in Georgia and Texas aviaries was isolated in budgerigar embryo fibroblasts inoculated with tissue homogenates from affected birds. Virus was most easily recovered from tissues containing many intranuclear inclusion bodies. Cytopathic effect on fibroblasts of all four isolates was characterized by a swollen nucleus followed by rounding and detachment of the affected cell from the monolayer. Properties suggesting the B-931 isolate belongs to… Show more

“…These changes are consistent with the changes described in APV infected birds previously (Bernier et al, 1981;Bozeman et al, 1981;Davis et al, 1981;Graham and Calnek, 1987). Changes seen in the male such as proliferation of lymphocytes, gliosis, and neuronal degeneration are more typical of the paramyxovirus infection.…”

“…APV is an uncoated virus 40-48 nm in diameter (Bernier et al, 1981;Bozeman et al, 1981;Davis et al, 1981). Its genome consists of the circular double-stranded DNA (Lehn and Muller, 1986;Rott et al, 1988).…”

“…The LM and TEM appearance of these polyomavirus inclusions was identical to the appearance of avian polyomavirus inclusions described in psittaciformes by others (Bozeman et al, 1981;Muller & Nitschke, 1986;Larimer et al, 1993;Garcia et al, 1994a, b). Our DNA hybridization results suggest that the small nuclear granules found during TEM examination might have consisted of polyomavirus proteins (incomplete virus).…”

“…Although polyomavirus is a feature of lesions and mortality in fledgling budgerigars infected with budgerigar fledgling disease virus (Bozeman et al, 1981;Muller & Nitschke, 1986), we believe that polyomavirus infection in the present study was an incidental finding. We attributed the diarrhoea in these hens to intestinal parasitism.…”

“…Development of this inactivated vaccine was achieved because the virus was cultivable in chicken embryo fibroblast cells (Bozeman et al, 1981).…”
