Characterization of aerosol sources in León (Spain) using Positive Matrix Factorization and weather types

Abstract: A one-year aerosol sampling period was conducted in León (Spain) to label the sources.• The PMF found 6 main aerosol contributors, from traffic (29%) to biomass burning (3%). • A linear model estimates each source supply to PM 10 from tracer elements and airflows. • PMF analysis along with circulation weather types provide a good estimation for PM 10 . • MLR models built offer a simplification for determining source apportionment.

“…The last PMF-resolved factor attributed to a mixture of secondary and marine sources was dominated by Na and Mg, major components of sea salt, as well as S, which is a tracer for secondary aerosols. 49,50 The presence of BC in this marine factor profile can be attributed to emissions from the very active ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. 51 We also observed a moderate amount of Ca and K, constituents of seawater.…”

“…The negative spectra of OCEC particles featured strong sulfate signals at 97 HSO 4 − and weak nitrate signals at 46 NO 2 − and 62 NO 3 − . OCEC particles mainly arise from the combustion source ( Bi et al, 2011 ; Oduber et al, 2021 ). The temporal variation of OCEC particles showed good correlations (r 2 = 0.50) with high-K-EC particles ( Fig.…”

“…In addition, information on source tracers is required for manual source identification. For example, the crustal elements including Al, Si, Ca, and Fe are markers for dust particles (Amato et al., 2009; Huang et al., 2014); Na + , K + , and Cl − are tracers to identify marine aerosol (Oduber et al., 2021). The present source profiles resolved from the PMF model are shown in Figure and detailed in Text S2.…”
