Characterization of an antimicrobial dental resin adhesive containing zinc methacrylate

Abstract: This study evaluates the effect of zinc methacrylate (ZM) on the degree of conversion (DC), cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity (AA) of an experimental resin. Tetraethyleneglycol dimethacrylate was used as the experimental resin and it was photo activated using camphoroquinone and ethyl 4-dimethylamine benzoate. Additionally, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10, 20 and 30 wt% of ZM was added to the various experimental resins. The DC was accessed by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy. For cytotoxicity, immortalized mou… Show more

“…The viability of the HT-29 cells was determined by measuring the reduction of soluble MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] to water insoluble formazan (Ali et al, 2010;Henn et al, 2011). Briefly, cells were seeded at a density of 2 × 10 4 cells per well in a volume of 100 μL in 96-well plates and grown at 37°C in a humidified atmosphere of 5% CO 2 /95% air for 24 h before being used in the MTT assay.…”

“…Examples of antibacterial components added to contemporary adhesive systems include glutaraldehyde (Felton et al 1989;Schmidlin et al 2004), 12-methacryloyloxy dodecylpyridinium bromide (MDPB), and most recently, methacrylate dimethyl ammonium chloride (Imazato et al 1998;Xiao et al 2009;Henn et al 2011). Given the incidence of dental caries, increased resistance by bacteria to antibiotics, the adverse effects of some antibacterial agents currently used in dentistry and the financial considerations in developing countries, there is a need for alternative prevention and treatment options that are safe, effective, and economical.…”

“…Mouse fibroblasts were maintained as a stock culture in DMEM and incubated at 37°C in a humidified atmosphere of 5% CO 2 in air until subconfluency was reached, as described previously [26, 27]. AH alone and combined with nfTD and nfHY was sterilized by exposure to germicidal UV (ultraviolet) light for 40 min.…”
