Characterization of Biochars Produced by Co-Pyrolysis of Hami Melon (Cantaloupes) Straw Mixed with Polypropylene and Their Adsorption Properties of Cadmium

Abstract: Reuse of waste from Hami melon (cantaloupes) straws (HS) mingled with polypropylene (PP) ropes is necessary and beneficial to mitigate environmental pollution. The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics and mechanisms of Cd2+ adsorption on biochars produced by co-pyrolysis of HS-PP with various mixing ratios. N2-sorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (… Show more

“…The peak at 3278 cm −1 is due to the O-H bond vibration, complemented by the C-OH band at 1105 cm −1 due to the hydroxyl groups of the graphene 3 . The peak at 1660 cm −1 is attributed to the stretching vibration of C=C and C=O groups 52 . The peak at 1342 cm −1 is due to the O-H bending or C-O stretching vibration 53 .…”

“…In the case of ALG-BC and ALG-CPL adsorbents, the characteristic peaks for the biochar and clinoptilolite crystallinity structure were noticed. For the ALG-BC, the sharp peaks at 2θ = 20.80, 26.60, 29.40, and 31.00° are associated with the biochar composition [ 48 ] . For the ALG-CPL composite the peaks at 2θ = 9.90, 11.23, 17.40, 22.34, 28.05, and 30.10° are characteristic of the crystal structure of clinoptilolite [ 49 ].…”

“…Biochar (BC) is a carbon-rich solid product of thermal stabilization of organic matter and is generally used for safe and potentially beneficial storage. Activated BC is an efficient adsorbent for removing organic contaminants and other nutrients (N and P) in aquatic environments . Many types of biomass waste, such as agricultural wastes, forestry residues, and sewage sludge can be used to produce BC, and, particularly, surface area affects adsorption efficiency, while wood-based BC increases the C/P ratio and reduces the amount of readily available P, which is attributed to the conversion into bioenergy or to be used as an alternative to chemical fertilizers .…”
