Characterization of Co-Based Metal Oxide Films on Glass

Abstract

Spray pyrolysis is a well-known technique for depositing metal oxides over large area substrates. Cobalt oxide based thin films have been deposited on glass substrates on the float glass production line by spray pyrolysis technique. The commercial products of this type of coatings are used for architectural purposes and in automotive industries. Additions of transition metal oxides in Co-oxide such as Cr and Fe improved mechanical and chemical properties of Co-based oxide coating. The Co-based binary and ternary mixed oxides showed cubic spinel structure. Lattice constants increased as the content of the additives increased and mean crystallite sizes decreased. The absorption bands in optical transmission spectra of the Cooxide tended to disappear and the transmittance increased with increasing Cr content. The results of durability tests showed that the Cr improved the chemical resistance and Fe incresed the adhesion and abrasion resistances.
