Characterization of concentration fluctuations of a surface plume in a neutral boundary layer

Abstract: We describe a new high-resolution sampling technique which can be used to measure concentration fluctuations simultaneously at several points in space. The technique has been used to measure the probability distribution function as a function of the detector location relative to a continuous and steady source. Results are compared to previous experiments and theoretical predictions. The spectra of the concentration fluctuations are analyzed and their behaviour as a function of downwind distance from the source… Show more

“…Much effort has been expended during the past 25 years to measure, understand, and model the PDF of plume concentration (Hanna, 1984;Lewellen and Sykes, 1986;Sawford, 1987;Dinar et al, 1988;Mylne and Mason, 1991;Yee et al, 1993). However, in spite of this enormous effort, there is still no general agreement on the shape (form) of the one-dimensional concentration PDF.…”

“…A number of experimental papers (e.g., Mylne and Mason, 1991;Dinar et al, 1988;Sawford, 1987;Hanna, 1984) have described tracer experiments using fast-response concentration detectors to study the turbulent fluctuations of concentration at fixed points downstream of a continuously emitting source. The results have given statistical descriptions of the concentration fluctuations under relatively simple atmospheric conditions in terms of, typically, the standard deviation of concentration flc and the concentration PDF (probability density function).…”
