Characterization of electrospun fibers and electrospray vancomycin-containing beads through the interstitial or lamellar separation of bead composite fiber membranes to evaluate their biomedical application in vitro

Abstract: Considering the advantages of electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)-fibers and antibiotic (vancomycin)-containing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-microbeads for wound dressings, a composite membrane was developed. Electrospun-aligned TPU-fibers were collected using a high-speed drum collector. Three groups of TPU-only, double-sided PVA-microbeads composite TPU-fibers (PVA/TPU/PVA sandwich, DSV40), and simultaneous electrospray PVA-microbeads/electrospun TPU-fibers (interstitial PVA-microbeads, CV40) composite m… Show more

“…As a result, the shortening in the compression direction was greater than the expansion in the tension direction. However, the stretch deformation was less pronounced than the deformation perpendicular to the stretch axis due to the crosslink rebound effect [ 31 ]. In the presence of the crosslinking agent CA, the PVA membranes can undergo intermolecular and intramolecular crosslinking during the heating process, and the number of crosslinking points between PVA molecules increases, thereby making the membranes tougher.…”

“…According to the ASTM D882 specification for tensile tests, a PVA fibrous membrane of uniform thickness was selected. The anisotropically electrospun membrane was cut into dumbbell-shaped specimens with a mean thickness of 0.04 ± 0.01 μm [ 31 , 32 ]. The mechanical properties of the post-crosslinked PVA membranes with different concentrations of CA were tested on a universal testing machine (HT-2402, Hung Ta, Taichung, Taiwan) at an elongation rate of 5 mm/min.…”

“…Hydrogel membrane produced through electrospinning technology as a nanofiber scaffold naturally has the advantages of high specific surface area, good tension, flexible and thin film, and high porosity [ 6 , 7 , 8 ]. In addition to simulating the structure of the extracellular matrix [ 9 ], the aligned fibers of electrospun hydrogel membranes can serve as biological scaffolds to guide cell attachment and proliferation, thus performing better than fibrous membranes with randomly arranged fibers [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ].…”

“…The use of drug carriers can overcome some problems related to the development and application of new drugs, but their use still has limitations, such as fast drug release, differences in solubility and biodistribution, etc., which will affect the interaction between the drug and the treatment site [ 5 , 6 , 7 ]. To optimize drug efficiency and reduce its side effects, many studies have prepared drug carriers by using natural or synthetic polymers through different techniques, such as emulsification, solvent evaporation, ionic gelation, self-assembly, nanoprecipitation, and supercritical fluid technology [ 8 , 9 ].…”
