Characterization of FBG sensor interrogation based on a FDML wavelength swept laser

Abstract: In this study, we develop an ultra-fast fiber Bragg grating sensor system that is based on the Fourier domain mode-locked (FDML) swept laser. A FDML wavelength swept laser has many advantages compared to the conventional wavelength swept laser source, such as high-speed interrogation, narrow spectral sensitivity, and high phase stability. The newly developed FDML wavelength swept laser shows a superior performance of a high scan rate of 31.3 kHz and a broad scan range of over 70 nm simultaneously. The performa… Show more

“…For the readout of FBG sensors, several different interrogators exist [28]. Interferometric methods [29,30], tunable-filter-based interrogation methods [31] or methods with conversion from the wavelength domain to the time domain [32] are described in literature. All mentioned methods however are realized in discrete, bulky optical setups, built and adjusted by hand, even in the case of commercial devices and not robust enough, e.g., against vibrations, for reliable utilization in automotive applications.…”

“…Over the last decade, the wavelength-swept laser has been used as a powerful tool in biomedical imaging and various sensing application areas [1][2][3][4][5][6]. In general, wavelength-swept lasers use wavelength-tunable filters with mechanical movements, such as Fabry-Perot tunable filters [1][2][3] and angle-scanning filters with diffraction gratings [4].…”

“…High-speed interrogation of FBG sensors has become a research topic of great interest recently [9]. The use of Fourier domain mode-locked swept laser [10], [11] has enabled interrogation speed up to 100 kHz. Most recently, a real-time spectroscopy technique [12], [13] has been successfully used in FBG sensor interrogation leading to impressive ultrafast and single-shot measurement at speed of tens of MHz [14][15][16][17][18].…”
