“…Bifidobacterium used MFS transporter to transport FOS and B. longum SB22 had similar gene clusters of FOS utilization to that in the previous study. 28 Likewise, the gene clusters of FOS utilization in L. paracasei were similar to L. paracasei 1195 as reported by Goh et al 10 In addition, S. alactolyticus had the same gene clusters of FOS utilization with Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1. 29 Both Lactobacillus and Enterococcus species utilize the PTS system to transport FOS.…”

“…DP4 nystose is usually the major component of commercialized FOS [ 13 , 20 ], whereas DP3 1-kestose showed better growth promoting activity in bifidobacteria and butyrate-producing human commensal Anaerostipes caccae than nystose [ 41 ]. The different activity was due to absence of genes involved in nystose-hydrolyzing enzymes and/or poor gene induction activity of nystose in the organisms [ 42 ]. Thus, FOS, especially in 1-kestose, is a promising prebiotic to alleviate insulin resistance-related disorders in obese-prone adults.…”

“…This study also found multiple FOS utilization gene clusters in bifidobacteria. FOS-C1 and FOS-C2 have been characterized in several strains [ 58 , 59 ]. FOS-C3/C4 seems to represent species-specific clusters of B. breve genes, and its function needs to be characterized.…”
