Characterization of galls, insect galls and associated fauna of Ecological Station of Jataí (Luiz Antônio, SP)

Abstract: This is the first study about galls, gall makers and associated fauna of the Ecological Station of Jataí. Galls are plant structures formed by abnormal growth of cells, tissues or organs induced by several organisms, as fungous, nematoids and insects. Five areas of the conservation unity, two in the phytophysionomy of cerrado in regeneration and three in the cerradão area were studied, totalizing 69 morphotypes of galls on 41 host species from 24 families. This is the first record of Annonaceae as the richest … Show more

“…In other Brazilian inventories, galls of Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Thysanoptera have been recorded in Barra de Maricá and Arraial do Cabo (RJ) , and Espinhaço Range (MG) ); Coleoptera and Hymenoptera in Grumari (RJ) (Oliveira & Maia 2005); Coleoptera in Boqueirã o (MG) (Malves & Frieiro-Costa 2012) and Pernambuco (Santos et al 2011); Hymenoptera in Santa Rita do Passa Quatro (SP) (Urso-Guimarã es & ScareliSantos 2006); and Thysanoptera in Luiz Antô nio (SP) (Saito & Urso-Guimarã es 2012). Hymenoptera and Thysanoptera are the less frequent galling insects in Brazil (Maia 2006 and Maia, in press.).…”

“…One-chambered galls (87%) predominated, as well as glabrous galls (97). In other inventories, globoid, one-chambered, and glabrous galls were also indicated as one of the most common (Maia and Souza, 2013;Malves and Freiro-Costa, 2012;Saito and Urso-Guimarães, 2012;Bregonci et al, 2010, Santos et al, 2012, suggesting that these are the predominant morphologies of Brazilian galls.…”
