Characterization of gas-liquid parameters in a down-flow jet loop bubble column

Abstract: -In order to characterize the gas-liquid parameters of a down-flow jet loop reactor, experiments were carried out to study the gas holdup, bubble sizes and their distribution, mass transfer area and mass transfer coefficient. The experiments were performed in the bubbly flow regime because of its stability and uniformity. Analysis of experimental data showed an unambiguous relationship between gas holdup, bubble size, bubble size distribution and interfacial area. It has also been found that gas holdup and int… Show more

“…Low [18] noted that confined and unconfined systems share rather similar entrainment mechanisms, the main difference being that in the former system, the flows in the receiving pool are restricted by the proximity of the downcomer wall. Ajay Mandal [19] used a confined system to generate fine down-flow bubbles that resulted in significantly higher gas-hold up than other gas-liquid systems. A number of other authors have studied the bubble penetration depth behavior of neutrally buoyant plunging jets in water, where the jet and the receiving pool were of the same density [9,[20][21][22].…”

“…Kulkarni et al (2005) presented a comprehensive review of bubble behavior in gasliquid systems and illustrated the present status of the subject thoroughly. Mandal (2010) studied the gas holdup, bubble sizes and their distribution for waterair system in a down-flow jet loop reactor. However, in comparison with Newtonian fluids, the understanding of the moving behavior and mass transfer mechanism of bubbles in non-Newtonian fluids remains still insufficient due to the inherent complexities.…”

“…where σ -the surface tension; r l -the density of the liquid; N -the power spent on mixing; V l -the volume of liquid in the apparatus. The obtained experimental data were processed according to the procedures [15][16][17]. For each operating mode of the apparatus, depending on the number of revolutions n and the liquid supply over the overflow h over , a dependence of the frequency of occurrence of bubbles of a certain size was constructed.…”
