Characterization of material properties of soft solid thin layers with acoustic radiation force and wave propagation

Abstract: Evaluation of tissue engineering constructs is performed by a series of different tests. In many cases it is important to match the mechanical properties of these constructs to those of native tissues. However, many mechanical testing methods are destructive in nature which increases cost for evaluation because of the need for additional samples reserved for these assessments. A wave propagation method is proposed for characterizing the shear elasticity of thin layers bounded by a rigid substrate and fluid-loa… Show more

“…Similar to DEHS, various external and internal stimuli may be used to generate transient shear waves within soft tissues. In recent years, DETS, in which the ARF is used to generate a transient shear wave, has attracted considerable attention [4,7,18,20,95,96,99,100]. This method, which generates remotely transient shear waves within biological tissues, permits us to probe the mechanical properties of biological tissues and is relatively suitable for clinical use.…”

“…However, when dynamic elastography methods are used to characterize thin-walled soft tissues, the waves are guided, and, therefore, the guided wave theory should be used to interpret the experimental data [100,117122]. Guided wave elastography (GWE) methods have attracted increasing interest in recent years, although they have not been commercialized yet.…”

“…Obviously, the velocity ( , , ) U x y t is a function of both time and space. Figure 1 shows the theoretical dispersion curves obtained by a commercial software package called Disperse (version 2.0.20a, Imperial College London, London, UK) [28]. In this paper, the incidence angle is set at 12.75°, which is suitable for an ACT to actuate the A0 mode in an aluminum plate with the frequency-thickness product of 0.3 MHz•mm.…”

“…To measure mechanical properties of such a medium, the variation of the phase velocity of guided waves in the structure is a key factor to be addressed. In recent studies, the guided wave formulation is adopted in ultrasound elastography of thin-walled soft tissues 4,19,20 . The main hypothesis of this study is the bladder tissue can be considered as a pre-stressed thin shell with nonlinear elasticity behavior.…”
