CHARACTERIZATION OF MOLLUSCICIDAL COMPONENT OF Moringa oleifera LEAF AND Momordica charantia FRUITS AND THEIR MODES OF ACTION IN SNAIL Lymnaea acuminata

Abstract: SUMMARYThe molluscicidal activity of the leaf powder of Moringa oleifera and lyophilized fruit powder of Momordica charantia against the snail Lymnaea acuminata was time and concentration dependent. M. oleifera leaf powder (96 h LC 50 : 197.59 ppm) was more toxic than M. charantia lyophilized fruit powder (96 h LC 50 : 318.29 ppm). The ethanolic extracts of M. oleifera leaf powder and Momordica charantia lyophilized fruit powder were more toxic than other organic solvent extracts. The 96 h LC 50 of the column … Show more

“…The two compounds were found to significantly inhibit, in vivo and in vitro, the acetylcholinesterase and acid and alkaline phosphatase activity in the nervous tissues of Lymnaea acuminata, and these inhibitions may be responsible for the molluscicidal activity of the powders. [91] Purified active ingredient isolated from the commonly available botanical plant Ocimum sanctum L. was characterized and its potential for deployment in environmentfriendly disease-management strategy of staple food crop rice (Oryzae sativa L.) and rice-based crop groundnut (Arachis hypogea) in lieu of synthetic chemicals was assessed. Partial purification of active principal was conducted through silica gel column chromatography in polarity gradient systems followed by single zone isolation of active compound and mass collection through TLC.…”

“…In addition, various substituted benzylamine forms are present in shrubs, such as 2-acetyl-benzylamine in Adhatoda vasica [ 5 ], 4-hydroxybenzylamine in Cydonia vulgaris , [ 6 ], or tribenzylamine in hops [ 7 ]. Bza has also been evidenced in diverse medicinal plants, such as Lepidium meyenii (Maca) [ 8 , 9 ] and Moringa oleifera (Drumstick tree) [ 10 , 11 ]. Many parts of the tree Moringa oleifera are widely used for multiple applications, including human nutrition in developing countries [ 12 ], and recognized in folk medicine for their hypoglycemic activity.…”
