Characterization of near-isogenic lines carrying QTL for high spikelet number with the genetic background of an <i>indica</i> rice variety IR64 (<i>Oryza sativa</i> L.)

Abstract: Total spikelet number per panicle (TSN) is one of the most important traits associated with rice yield potential. This trait was assessed in a set of 334 chromosomal segment introgression lines (ILs: BC3-derived lines), developed from new plant type (NPT) varieties as donor parents and having the genetic background of an indica-type rice variety IR64. Among the 334 ILs, five lines which had different donor parents and showed significantly higher TSN than IR64 were used for genetic analysis. Quantitative trait … Show more

“…S1). Using a BC 4 F 2 population derived from a cross between IR64 and YTH326, we identified qTSN4, for high TSN, between SSR markers RM3423 and RM17492 on the long arm of chromosome 4 (22). NIL-SPIKE was developed by self-pollination of a plant selected from the BC 4 F 2 population and was used for evaluating agronomic traits, transformation, and expression.…”

“…Using the ILs, we identified 21 QTLs for yield components such as total spikelet number per panicle (TSN), grain weight, and panicle number. Among the QTLs, qTSN4, for high TSN, was commonly detected on the long arm of chromosome 4 in five NPT lines derived from different tropical japonica cultivars (22). Additionally, a nearisogenic line (NIL) for qTSN4 from YP9, derived from tropical japonica landrace Daringan with an IR64 genetic background, had more spikelets per panicle and more branches than IR64.…”

“…With the development of molecular techniques and successful establishment of highdensity molecular genetic linkage map, quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis has become an important method for genetic research of complex quantitative traits and has been widely used for most agronomic traits in rice (Nakagawa et al, 2005;Yoshinobu et al, 2007;Fujita et al, 2012;Liu et al, 2006;2013). However, there are few reports on its application for investigating nitrogen uptake and utilization characteristics (Senthilvel, 1999;Senthilvel et al, 2001;Fang et al, 2001;Shan et al, 2005).…”

“…(2) Total spikelet number per panicle Eight NILs for TSN (five for qTSN4, two for qTSN12, and one for qTSN7) were developed. All five NILs (IR64-NIL2, IR64-NIL3, IR64-NIL4, IR64-NIL5, and IR64-NIL6) for qTSN4 were developed using different donor parents (Fujita et al 2012) (Table 3, Fig. 3).…”
