Characterization of oil palm ash (OPA) and thermal properties of OPA-filled natural rubber compounds

Abstract: In the present study, characterization and morphological study of oil palm ash (OPA) and thermal properties of OPA-filled natural rubber (NR) compounds were carried out. The morphological study revealed that the OPA particle was irregular with rough surface and porous structure. Energy dispersive x-ray analysis and an x-ray fluorescence spectrometry indicated that silicon was the highest component in OPA. Fourier transform infrared analysis and x-ray diffraction indicated that the main mineralogical components… Show more

“…It is surprising that POFA was found to enhance rutting resistance as against its intended purpose of serving as anti-stripping agent. This finding is supported with the microstructural results from Ooi and Ismail [41] where POFA modification was found to improve the thermal resistance. Analyzing the images shows that only the HMA parade minor loss in aggregate coating, but the percentage loss is insignificant to be considered as stripping failure potential of the mix.…”

“…Recall that there are various elemental compositions such as silicon, calcium, aluminium, magnesium, potassium, etc that exist in OPA particles, which were revealed by the XRF Spectrometer. Therefore, the peaks at about 792 and 1037 cm −1 were attributed to the Si‐O bonds alternating to Al‐O bonds whereas the 874 and 1410 cm −1 suggested the presence of calcite as reported in previous work . There was a broad band in the region between 3100 and 3600 cm −1 assigned to the hydroxyl (‐OH) functional groups.…”

“…Generally, the OPA showed the unique surface characteristics, i.e. irregular shaped particle with porous structure and rough surface , which introduces better physical interaction between filler surface and rubber matrix . One of the major drawbacks of using OPA is its hydrophilic nature that causes agglomeration and poor dispersion during compounding.…”
