Characterization of properties of Al–Al2O3 nano-composite synthesized via milling and subsequent casting

Abstract: In this research, the feasibility of adding mechanically activated nano-crystalline Al 2 O 3 particles into aluminum matrix was investigated. For this purpose, Al 2 O 3 powder was milled in a high-energy ball mill for 20 h. Subsequently, 1 wt.% of Al 2 O 3 powder was added to molten Al. Then microstructure, powder characterizations and mechanical and wear properties of this composite were studied. Peak broadening of the diffraction patterns clearly showed that Al 2 O 3 crystallites were in the nanometer scale … Show more

“…An effective remedy for the complicated fabrication route, can be the application of conventional casting methods, due to assets such as, low cost, ease-to-handle advantages, mass production abilities, strong matrix-particle bonding, relatively easy control of matrix structure and near net shape [3]. Towards a casting based production, Aluminum Matrix Composites (AMCs) reinforced with nanoparticles of SiC [4], B 4 C [5], Al 2 O 3 [3,6], MgO [7], AlN [8], TiB 2 and TiO 2 [9], fly ash [10], etc. have been investigated.…”

“…However, a uniform wear mechanism cannot be established, since a simultaneous contribution of several key factors can lead to severe complexity [25]. Literature on the wear performance of cast nano PRAMs is scarce: Nano Al 2 O 3 reinforced Al showed lower wear loss than the monolithic alloy [6]. Rana et al [26] reported that, at a low load and short sliding distance, AA5083 reinforced with SiC nanoparticles displayed higher wear resistance than its microsized counterpart; this trend was reversed, at high load and longer sliding distance.…”

“…The black dross initially contained angular particles with different sizes and were broken into much smaller particles after mechanical activation. Large clusters with a typical size of several micrometers were observed due to the aggregation of smaller nanoparticles [19]. …”

“…The effects of HEBM on the structural evolution of Al 2 O 3 reinforced Al-MMCs were studied in detail [22][23][24]. The aluminum peaks tended to broaden as the milling time increased, indicating a decrease in the crystallite size [23].…”
