Characterization of Race-Specific Interactions Among Isolates ofVerticillium dahliaePathogenic on Lettuce

Abstract: Verticillium wilt, caused by Verticillium dahliae, poses a major threat to lettuce (Lactuca sativa) production in California. Incorporation of resistance into commercial lettuce cultivars offers the least expensive technique of sustaining production in infested areas. To test the breadth of the resistance identified in field experiments, a pair of susceptible (‘Salinas’ and ‘Sniper’) and resistant (‘La Brillante’ and ‘Little Gem’) lettuce cultivars were used as differentials and individually inoculated with 29… Show more

“…Greenhouse evaluations. Verticillium wilt resistance was evaluated in greenhouse experiments using 16 cultivars inoculated with V. dahliae isolates VdLs16 (race 1) and VdLs17 (race 2) that were prepared and maintained according to Vallad et al (24). Seeds of each cultivar were sown in 200-well plug trays.…”

“…A greenhouse testing method that is correlated with field results is needed for further germplasm screening and future genetic studies. In greenhouse experiments, Vallad et al (24) used a root dip inoculation method to test La Brillante, Little Gem, and the susceptible iceberg cvs. Salinas and Sniper against 30 isolates of V. dahliae and 2 isolates of V. albo-atrum.…”

“…Lettuce also presents an example of racespecific resistance (162). V. dahliae strains virulent on the cultivars La Brillante and Salinas were designated as race 2, whereas those capable of causing disease only on cv.…”

“…V. dahliae strains virulent on the cultivars La Brillante and Salinas were designated as race 2, whereas those capable of causing disease only on cv. Salinas were designated as race 1 (162). Although some lettuce cultivars, breeding lines, or accessions show some form of resistance or tolerance to race 2 of the pathogen (R. J. Hayes, personal communication), resistance to race 2 of the pathogen has not been identified in lettuce, and brings into question the durability of race 1 resistance (65).…”
